We all fancy a change from time to time and some dogs can be the same. Here are some handy hints to follow when you want to change your dog’s food.
It is not the case that when your dog is on one dog food it can never be changed but care needs to be taken and you do need to ensure that you follow the guidelines set out so and not to cause any upset.
You might think that you don’t have to make any considerations when changing your dog’s diet, that you can simply switch it over and that be that. This however, is not the case as making a total switch all in one go can actually upset your dogs stomach and cause them to be sick or have diarrhoea.
This could end up with accidents in the house which you will have to clear up and so it is best all round, for your dogs wellbeing and for your peace of mind that your dogs health is okay that you read these simple steps which will make the transition much easier for all involved.
1. Changing the type of food
If you find that what you are feeding your dog doesn’t suit it, then maybe it’s time for a change. Changing a dog’s diet doesn’t hurt, as long as the change is done properly. Before choosing a new brand, look at the nutritional information on your current dog food and compare the differences.
2. Are you changing flavour, not brand?
If you feed your dog a certain brand and only want to change the flavour then this will be an easy process. For example, if you feed your dog Arden Grange Chicken and Rice dog food and want to change to Arden Grange Lamb and Rice, this can be done over a couple of days and the dog shouldn’t suffer any side effects, such as an upset stomach.
3. Timescale for changing
When the time comes to a change the brand it is best to make the change over a one week period. Make sure you have enough of the old food to last a week when you purchase the new one. Then on day one feed the dog three quarters old food with one quarter new and keep to that formula for two-three days.
Then change to half old food and half new and again do that for two-three days. Once you have done that for a couple of days then change to one quarter old food and three quarters new for the final couple of days. Once the couple of days is up then switch completely to the new brand. By changing your dog’s diet this way it will help to keep their stomach settled.
